SUMMER 2011The Dallaglio Foundation (below) /// The Lord's Taverners
Below is a quotation from Lawrence's website: ... I realised I could be more effective by using my own success and motivation to galvanise others, and leading teams of likeminded people. Then my mother Eileen died from cancer in December 2008 and I lost the foundation stone of my life. My mother thought everyone deserved the opportunity to shine - she believed in me long before I did anything to deserve it and supported me through everything. Because of her I know that nothing is unobtainable. My mother gave me an unshakeable belief that it wasn’t just okay to shoot for the moon – it was essential. Through the Dallaglio Foundation I want to pass on that belief, but also give people the tools and money to do it. That’s why the money we raise through the Foundation will go towards very specific, tangible projects which make a real and personal difference to people’s lives. And it’s why we are interested in ideas and communication as well as money. Together we can translate ideas into action and need into supply. We are powerful together. Below are the front and back covers of the book:
The Lord's TavernersThis charity supports disadvantaged and disabled children, ging them the opportunity to play sport, perhaps using specially adapted equipment such as a wheelchair. A typical price of one of these chairs is £1000. Here is a quotation from their website: '... we have developed into both a vibrant Club and a Charity. We have thousands of members who all share a love of cricket and a desire to ensure that as many children as possible, especially those with special needs, have the chance to participate in sport and recreation. We are recognised by the England and Wales Cricket Board as the official national charity for recreational cricket.' THE SWIMATHON, 21-22 MAY 2011 This year Ma'am Kroiter organised a Swimathon, supporting the Lord's Taverners, on the whole Saturday, and the Sunday morning of the fete and, indeed, in a few sessions afterwards. Our target was to swim the distance from Kate Middleton’s home in Bucklebury to Buckingham Palace (AND BACK!). This is a total of 168km. Thank you so much for your support with this. Charitable donations should be made payable to Caldicott Trust Limited. SUCCESS: Thursday, 26 May: The Final Results We smashed our target and as a school we have swum 9948 lengths. This is 199km! On Wednesday night four members of staff swam 410 lengths each in a mission to beat Mr Scott Lyon’s 404! Ma’am Kroiter and Mr Hanrahan started the epic swim at 1740, emerging 2-3 hours later. They were then joined by Ma’am Langley and Mr Langley who completed their swim at around 2000. Ma’am Doggart also joined in at 2130 to swim 100 lengths. All of the boys swam, and some were able to do more in their own time, particularly if not involved in a cricket match.
In an additional Fourth Form games session the following boys also contributed and swam 480 lengths between them: J Pickering, A Curtis, A Elgendy, G Thompson, W A’Brassard, O Atkins, G Acland, J Granville, C Goswami-Myserscough, H McClean, W Prew, E Cuttell, T Gosal
