A Fact from the Past - and Filming

Caldicott's address is shown as in Crown Lane, Farnham Royal. In fact this is not true - we are a short walk from Farnham Common, and actually around a mile from Farnham Royal. However, when we moved here in 1938, the then Headmaster thought that Farnham Common sounded too, well, common, so he arranged for our address to be changed to Farnham Royal! In fact Farnham Common is actually an even nicer and more interesting place than Farnham Royal!

Do look at the City of London's excellent website, here (will open in a new window). There is a map and a lot of interesting information.

Famous for another reason ...

Walking in the Beeches yesterday (19 July 2008), I came across an interesting pamphlet called On Location at Burnham Beeches.  It names all the films & television programmes made there since 1946; there are 72, in each of which at least a part was filmed here. I will ask if we can reproduce it; for the moment, here are just two from each decade:

  • 1946: Great Expectations, starring John Mills
  • 1948: London Belongs to Me, starring Richard Attenborough
  • 1955: Lost, starring Thora Hird
  • 1956: A Town Like Alice, starring Peter Finch & Virginia McKenna
  • 1962: The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, starrting Michael Redgrave & Tom Tom Courtenay
  • 1960s: The Avengers (TV, starring Patrick Macnee, Diana Rigg & others)
  • 1970s: Benny Hill Show (TV)
  • 1970s: Z Cars (TV, starring Colin Welland)
  • 1987: Lair of the White Worm, starring Hugh Grant, Amanda Donohue & Catherine Oxenberg
  • 1988: Minder Christmas Special (TV, starring Dennis Waterman, George Cole & Richard Briers)
  • 1990: Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and others
  • 1998: Alice in Wonderland, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Short & others
  • 2006: Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix, starring Daniel Radcliffe & Evann Lynch
  • 2008: Midsomer Murder series 11 (TV, starring John Nettles)

As I said, there are over 70. Hope to list the others soon, and to get some photographs of some of the filming sites
