G8 - Don't Worry |
|
|
|
Thursday, 10 July 2008 |
|
You have no doubt been having sleepless nights worrying about he G8 Summit! Well, there has been another major development, this time at Caldicott.
As you can see, the main Academic Block corridor now has a great new outlook. The internal window, still with pictures of Z Goswami-Myerscough and N Brown, has been removed (see lower right), as has much of the section of wall it was attached to. A new area has been created from part of the old, large, computer room, and boxfiles and lockable lockers will be kept in there.
As I said, don't worry about G8 - this on its own will be GR8!

I hope not!
The weather was mostly very pleasant, sometimes even hot, before we broke up. Since then it has frequently been raining really hard, and there have even been a couple of thunderstorms. Last year it was much the same, and for much of the holidays. Let's hope ...

Half an hour later the sun was shining!

Speech Day |
|
|
|
Friday, 04 July 2008 |
|
Another year over! It concluded with Speech Day, followed by tea on the lawns.
There will be a full report in the next issue of the magazine, due out just after the beginning of next term. For the moment, we start with a picture, followed by a very brief report and a few more pictures of boys receiving prizes.
Above, Junior School boys, Chairman of Governors Mr Graham Puttergill, and the Rt Hon Lord Justice Scott Baker behind him,
during the introductory speech.
Mr Puttergill thanked Sir Scott for coming, and for recruiting a youthful Headmaster ten years ago, the Centenary Hall being built ('an ambitious building project'), the inspection in Autumn - lots of outstandings - but was most impressed that the Inspectors had said that they were bowled over by the boys. That is not, however, an excuse to be complacent: the quality of education we provide must continue to be the best. He described the new developments (not listed here - details will become clear over the coming weeks), and was pleased that pupil numbers were at maximum levels for September.
The Headmaster then spoke. His speech will be printed in full in the magazine, so is not reported here. At the end he introduced Sir Scott Baker, who presented the prizes.
Sir Scott then spoke at some length about the Diana Inquest, for which he was the Coroner. That aspect of the speech will also be reported in the magazine. He concluded, however, by giving the boys some advice:
-
Have respect for others
-
Use your talent, even if you didn't win a prize. There will be something you can excel at.
-
Life will not always be fair. Accept that.
-
If you give a favour, don't expect something in return.
-
Tell the truth at all times.
The boys, parents and staff then went for tea on the lawns, and then their SUMMER HOLIDAY!

The afternoon was taken up with the Wood House Party. Thanks to Mr Fletcher for this excellent picture of C White, Mr Masterman ('Musty') and A Spratling with a splendid Wood cake:
Well done to everyone - and not just Wood, but the whole school for a great year
Then it was packing for the boarders, followed by the final barbecue of the year.
Accosted by Mr Paget!
"Please could you take a picture of me with my Form," he asked, though perhaps rather more forcefully than that! The result is below:
And even on informal occasions, no boy with his shoelaces undone!
After this was the ultimate challenge, the staff v boys relay - the boys are National Champions. Below we see Mr Taylor under pressure from Y Belo. Picture by S Stalder.
Getting dark, but still time to run
I mentioned above about the Captain of Basketball, L Hawley. It must surely be fate! Two hours later I had a telephone call that B Jang has won 2nd prize in the Preparatory School Magazine Photographer of the Year competition. Well done to him: not quite the two Firsts we have had before, but an excellent article in the last issue of the magazine (with examples of how to take a good photograph illustrated with pictures taken by Caldicott boys) ensured a much larger entry. That can only be good for Prep School photography and, who knows, for photography in general. As I said, it must be fate: the subject of the photo is L Hawley, our new Captain of Basketball!
