Ladies' Netball

Sally Chilvers very kindly sent this message, and a photo:

he ladies met this morning for the first netball fixture. We were all very keen, and stories of the last time we played - which for most of us was about 30 years ago - were exchanged. Unfortunately the lady from Kingsmead Recreation centre, who had the key to the courts, forgot to turn up which was very disappointing. She assures us next week will run without hitches.

They say that every cloud has a silver lining ...
So it was no game - and thus an opportunity for a great photo!

Science Lecture

Mr Middleton, the Head of Chemistry at Millfield, came to give a lecture to the 6th form today. He started off by lighting and blowing up two hydrogen-filled balloons, quickly grabbing our attention. The next one involved melting a potassium compound, and inserting one jelly-baby, which started glowing and spewing out smoke, setting off the fire alarm! There were many other experiments to follow, including setting light to a flask containing hydrogen peroxide, which created a huge column of smoke, shaking two bottles containing a yellow liquid which then turned blue, and then back again, due to an unstable reaction reversing as soon as it was no longer shaken, and adding highly concentrated sulphuric acid to a tube of sugar which grew and created a very bad-smelling black compound.

Some of the boys and then Mr Smith, who has just come to us from Millfield, were asked to scoop up some bubbles of a washing-up liquid solution containing butane. Mr Middleton then lit the bubbles with a taper and the bubbles burst into flame! No one was hurt, thankfully, as they had wetted their arms and hands before. My favourite experiment was another washing up liquid solution, along with some other chemicals in a tall measuring cylinder. This reacted and formed a brown/black liquid, which quickly filled the measuring cylinder and overflowed into the tray around it. I thought that was the end of the experiment, but suddenly black foam grew out of the cylinder, which quickly turned yellow, which Mr Middleton said was due the minor changing of the metals’ properties. The yellow foam then began to collapses in stages. The lecture was very interesting and I would have liked to see more of the fun side of chemistry.

Not a Bad Holiday

Thanks to F Chalmers for the picture below showing his success at sailing during the summer holiday. Seeing this made me wonder, what did other Caldicott boys get up to? It might be an interesting thread - did you perhaps go anywhere really unusual? If you have any pictures and information, email them to me at agp (@caldicott.com), with some information. Of course, if you prefer the old method, send in a print or a negative and it can be scanned.

Term Has Started

The First (Almost) Normal Day! Well, the term has begun and as I write (1115) the boys are in Lesson 4 (their first lesson!). The morning has been very busy with the initial arrangements. The new day boys have found their classroom, their teachers, and - I expect - have also made a few new friends. There has been a Form Period where the school arrangements are discussed and the boys' timetables given. Now, of course, they are in three different groups - Junior, Middle and Senior - with different timings for some days.

The morning finished with a whole-school Assembly. The new staff were introduced, after the Headmaster had given a warm welcome to the 62 new boys, of course. Interesting fact - did you know that there are two members of staff who were boys at Papplewick. Don't worry - Caldicott has already converted one, and is just starting to work on Mr Taylor, who will be teaching Classics). Do you know who the remaining teacher is? Answer is to be published tomorrow. In the meantime if you would like a moment of glory, please email agp (@caldicott.com) and I will publish the names of the "Specialised Subject - Caldicott Staff" Mastermind winners tomorrow!
Mr Smith, our new Deputy Head, also talked to the boys. He said first of all that one of the Caldicott precepts is to "Work Hard and Play Hard." He then spoke of his time at Millfield, and the talk he would give to the pupils at the beginning of term. It was exactly the same, but with the addition of "and take care of each other." He thought that this was actually the most important.

Mr Smith also went through the Anti-Bullying Policy, which is printed in the back of the Calendar. Mr Wild read out the successes (100%) of last term's Music Exams. I will not publish them here, as they are all in the next magazine, due out at exeat.

Then, sadly, there was another technical hitch with the computers during break. Apologies for this - we are almost 100% reliable, but this has been a very exceptional time.
