Favourite Food Print E-mail

Today in their ICT lesson 3B listed their favourite and least favourite school meals. The aim was to introduce them to bullet points at different levels.

Here is just one good one - though there were actually several. More should be published in the ICT section when all of the 3rd Form have finished.

The Secret Garden Print E-mail

We read extracts from The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett before visiting the secret garden created by Mrs Anderson in the hall.

We then used the two experiences to write our own poems about Mary finding the key and entering the secret garden.

We have thought about:

  • using all our senses
  • our choice of vocabulary
  • the order of words
  • the necessity, or not, of connective words
  • the sound and rhythm

We planned, drafted and redrafted, reading aloud and listening to each other until we were happy with the final version.

The Secret Garden

Where in this vast labyrinth lies the door
To a world of secrets unknown?
A gust of wind and keen eye she sweeps
Away the vines to find an old mahogany door
Set in a stone wall.

She stares at the door sick with the excitement of
Being so close yet so far.
Fumbles with key, she steps in
An eerie aura emanates from the door.

Key in lock.
Heart pounding against ribcage
She heaves the door.
A garden ridden of former
Glory lies before her.

Roses tangle at her feet
Walls clad in moss and ivy.
Grass brown and unkempt with weeds
Rhododendrons withering on the
Edge of life in the fading twilight.
