Chess Match - and something else Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 January 2008

Today there was a Caldicott first - an U9 Chess Match. It was against Gateway School in Great Missenden. The U11's also played, and the results are published in the Sport section - a 3-3 draw to both teams.

Below are a couple of pictures from the match. The Gateway faces have been blurred for security.

A 'CLARION' dated Friday, 21 March 1952 has been found.

This was described as

THE CALDICOTT NEWSPAPER THAT LEADS THE WORLD.

There is a report about a mumps epidemic, information about the King's death, and a library quiz:

1) How often have you seen a book lying on the classroom floor?
2) How often have you left your book on the desk, on in the changeroom [sic], or in your dormitory?
3) How often have you seen a book lying in such places, picked it up idly, and put it down somewhere else?
4) How often have you banged someone on the head with a book?

They are asked to award one mark for each time they can answer questions 1, 2 & 3, and 5 marks for question 4.

Then, "If you get high marks in this exam, you should be ashamed of yourself. Best mark of all is 0!

But, seriously, how about this for an idea? Every time the librarian finds a Library book lying about, he takes it back and charges the borrower one halfpenny. Then at the end of the term the money he has collected (which at the present rate should amount to pounds!) can be used to buy new books or magazines ..."

There are some drawings, too, an example of which is below.

Mr Brown (with a little help from AGP) is organising the archives, and this - and a great deal more material - will be available to view over the coming weeks.

TAKE IT OFF - HANG IT UP!

Mr Smith congratulated the boys on their performance in the Declamations yesterday. He did not mean this just for the performers - he also said how impressed the adjudicator was with the way that the boys listened. Towards the end of the Assembly the Headmaster also gave a special mention to J Owen, whose performance he had particularly enjoyed.

TAKE IT OFF - HANG IT UP!

Mr Smith also told the boys about the School Council Meeting last Friday. The proposals are all going to be discussed at the Senior Management meeting later today, and will be reported back in two weeks (6th Form in France next week).

TAKE IT OFF - HANG IT UP!

House Cross Country. Mr Anderson gave the results so far. Unfortunately because of the weather the Junior race has not taken place. The first 15 boys from each House are counted, so obviously the lowest score wins.

SENIORS

 Wood (386)
Cooper (460)
Jenkins (501)
McArthur (523)

First three boys:
1) L Mann (C)
2) S Stalder (W)

  COLTS

Wood (200)
McArthur (268)

First three boys:
1) H Weir (M)

TAKE IT OFF - HANG IT UP!

What is the above about? Mr Summers had the boys saying this back to him at the end of the assembly. It does seem very effective at stopping boys leaving clothes all over the floor! Why not try it at home? I'm sure your son would really appreciate it ...

REMEMBER: TAKE IT OFF - HANG IT UP!

The picture below shows B Nunn (9.06) at the end of his piece. He looks small facing the crowd in that big hall, but he - and everyone else - seems to cope! I wish I had been as good at their age.

Thought you might like to see the week's Mark Reading results.

As you can see, Jenkins have won tuck this week.

The competition, though, is still very close.

McArthur has not had a good week, but if last term is anything to go by, they may soon catch up unless Wood - of course - can stop them! (Though admittedly Cooper or Jenkins may actually do it.)

Note that the totals are recalculated according to the number of boys in the House.

Mr Lloyd has produced a chart of the last week's weather at Caldicott, and I hope that this will be a regular feature.

Now this is serious weather data.
Please don't ask what this is about. I just decided to read the sentence at the bottom.
However, it was right - 1145 and it has started raining.
