School Council Meeting Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 April 2008
This was the second meeting since the Council's inception a term ago. Though perhaps not as powerful as the old Witenagemot, I nevertheless am still unable to give details of proposals made, as it is both politic and polite to give time for the Headmaster/SMC to consider them!

I will, however, give a few temping hints: topics ranged from toilets to the adventure playground to bedtimes to 'play' clothes and social functions with girls' schools. Having probably said too much already, I can now say no more!

While meat may perhaps be lacking in this report, I can say that the boys learned something of the procedures for voting and speaking, and there was healthy - and always controlled - discussion. The votes always added up to 13, the numbers of this second School Council.

The picture below shows 5th-formers P King and C Brown, representatives for their forms, near the start of the meeting.

Some serious thought

Athletics and Photography Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 April 2008
Today was Thursday Afternoon Activities. This is very much a first - previously activities only took place in the Autumn and Summer Terms.

It is, of course, a great idea for the photography activity, and today the weather was particularly benevolent, with both sunshine and interesting clouds.

Over the next few days there will be a new picture. H Vernau (13.00), helped by experienced photographer O Gillen-Toon (11.00) bravely ventured to the Athletics, and took pictures of the long jump practice. They are particularly effective because the camera was low down.

Now for a rather more fun picture, stressing the enjoyable nature of Caldicott activities. Of course, on the competitive athletics field Caldicott is without peer! However, A Spratling, below, obviously wants a bit of fun too.

Oh no! About the land ...

Lunch Yesterday Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 April 2008
As you may well have heard, yesterday (23 April) was St George's Day, and a great reason for one of the famous Caldicott Special Meals.

Here is the menu: Roast pork & crackling, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, Yorkshire pudding, cabbage, gravy & apple sauce, cauliflower cheese, followed by Old English Trifle.

Well done, boys

An appropriate sign

Reserves of food, and lots of it!

Assembly: 24 April Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 April 2008

The Assembly began with four boys (T Ahmed, Y Akhtar, A Willford & G Peel) describing the visit of 5M to Helen and Douglas House. Their complete report will be published in this term's magazine; for the moment, here is a picture of the boys in Assembly. They are standing, on the left.

After the Cricket results had been given out by Mr Rich, and J Breeden (108) had shaken the Headmaster's hand, Mr Smith told the boys that there would be School Council meeting on Monday. This should not involve any catering issues, as there is a Catering Committee for that (names in the Calendar).

He also reminded day boys that they MUST check out with someone on latch days. It can be as normal or, if it is a late match, with the member of staff taking the team.

Finally, he stressed the importance of two words: Thank you. This is a great Caldicott tradition, and it impressed Mr Smith in his short time here. He finished by saying it was the most improtant thing he was telling them that day.

The First Match Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Despite the rain in the morning, most matches went ahead in what was often a sunny - and always a dry - afternoon. The picture below shows J Breeden batting. I think that this one went for 4,a nd he went on to get the term's first century - 108. You can also see our new electronic scorebox in the background, shining like a beacon even in brilliant sunshine!
