Book Week 2007

INTRODUCTION

Our Focus for Book Week   'Doorways – to Learning'

The purpose of Book Week is to encourage the boys to use reading resources and the library and to make  them  more aware of the facilities that are at their disposal which will enable them to conduct their own research.

Although Book Week should, of course, be a hugely enjoyable week, it would be wrong to give the impression that it is just a fun way of spending some time as we approach the middle of the Autumn term.  All activities that have been planned are based on the curriculum, with similar topics being covered and discussed during the  week.  We also hope that it will make the boys more aware of how it is possible to create a link between apparently completely diverse subjects.

This is an excellent focus for the school.  It provides all of Caldicott with a common goal.  Many parents have worked together with the Headmaster’s wife, our Librarian and myself to create the “Secret Garden”.  Using  flowers made by the boys and a group of parents and plants and garden furniture loaned to us by Farnham Common Nurseries the corner of the hall was transformed into a peaceful oasis.  Our Maintenance Department, led by Mr Walker, expertly built the garden wall, and the Kitchen Staff, led by Mrs Ayling, created a sumptuous meal for the Mad Hatter’s Lunch on the Friday.  The Head of Housekeeping, Mrs Banning-Boddy, provided many cups of coffee to parent helpers and also created an amazing tapestry to cover the Storyteller’s Chair which will grace the Junior Library.  This is also an opportunity for the unveiling of our newly refurbished Junior School Library.  We are so grateful to Mrs Gillen-Toon, who spent an immeasurable amount of time sorting, cataloguing and bar-coding all the books  so that they can be linked to the main Library system.  She has been helped by a band of Mums who also come in daily to listen to the Junior boys reading.

The Headmaster and the Deputy Head, the Front Office staff and the Bursar’s Department have offered their full support and it is only as a result of this that the whole venture has been possible.

See the links for the reports about just some of the events each day.  These will give you a view through our school Doorway to see the many learning experiences on offer for the boys.
