Art is taken seriously at Caldicott. It is pursued by many to a high standard, yet the art room is an exciting and fun place for all pupils to work. Every boy receives a double art lesson each week, during which he follows a progressive and challenging course. The art room is a large and well-lit space and there are ample opportunities during the school day for boys to pop in and advance their project work, or perhaps make a greetings card or poster. There are many books covering all aspects and periods of the subject, six networked computers, and a TV with audio visual equipment including a digital projector, which they may use for their work or research purposes. In the evening the art room is a lively, welcoming space with the hi-fi playing background music, in which boarders can do their artwork or pursue a hobby; it is a constant source of pleasure for the boys who choose to use the facility. In addition to this there are four structured club meetings a week: Junior Art Club, Senior Art Club, Sculpture Club, and the Caldicott Art Society.

In principle the subject uses a combination of knowledge, creativity and practical skills to create images and objects that relate to a wide range of human issues and needs; these may serve as a record or as decoration, to impart ideas, or improve the aesthetic or practical quality of everyday products and esoteric objects. As a result they may be sensually pleasing or intellectually challenging. In practical terms Art in its widest sense is essentially an experiential activity; at Caldicott it is no less so and we aim to develop every pupils' capability to create things that relate specifically to them as well as the world around them. To this end the department runs at least six educational visit every year: National Portrait Gallery, The National Gallery, Tate Britain, Victoria and Albert Museum, Royal Academy, and Tate Modern; these are supplemented by additional gallery and theatre outings and talks by visiting professionals.

The department offers equal opportunities to all pupils and is committed to enlightening them to the fact that the subject affects many aspects of their lives, by turning their attention to the evidence around them. The existence of an artistic timeline serves well: whether achievements, current activity and possible future developments in the world of art, we highlight the possibilities open to all pupils. Through this study and practical activity we emphasise the enjoyment, satisfaction and immense sense of achievement that can be gained by those who are directly engaged in the subject.
