Trio Sarastro Print E-mail
15 NOVEMBER 2005

The programme was incredibly well-chosen, and was never dull. Here are the pieces they performed.

trio

Emil Chudnovsky (violin), Jamie Walton (cello), Daniel Grimwood (piano)

Piano Trio No, 1 in C major, op. 8, Shostakovich
Vocalise for cello and piano, Rachmaninov
Au lac de Wallenstadt for piano solo, Liszt
Piano Trio in G minor, Debussy

- INTERVAL -

Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (violin and piano), Saint-Saens
Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, op. 66, Mendelssohn

Two of the works (Shostakovich and Debussy) were early ones by composers in their teenage years. The concert finished at around 10pm, but that was because it was so good that there were several encores. A memorable one was the violinist unscrewing the hair from his bow, holding it, and putting the hair over the strings and the wood of the bow below the violin, enabling it to be used as a percussion jnstrument. Unfortunately there are no pictures of that, as I left my camera so that in the second half I could just enjoy the music. Perhaps that is good, however, as I have recommended that Mr Wild keeps a careful eye on the boys' violin bows. I suspect that you have to be rather good to do that (he'd just finished a Paganini Caprice, which brought the house down).
