Cricket on the sports fields

THE CALDICOTT PREMIER LEAGUE

Cricket at Caldicott has become incredibly popular in recent years and as a result a revolutionary new league system has been unveiled at school. The new ‘CPL’ has taken off in epic fashion and we are already into round two. ADJB (Mr Baker) was the man behind the idea and I know he spent many an hour or two negotiating contracts with the Sachin Tendulkars and Shane Warnes of the Caldicott Third Game World. There are six franchises (Beaconsfield Barbarians, Windsor Warriors, Taplow Tornadoes, GXplosives, Slough Sledgehammers & Denham Devils) who will battle it out against each other before the dramatic playoffs later in the term. The final, which will take place on main square, will be umpired by none other than the Headmaster himself! It is sure to be a nerve-racking day for the two teams involved.

The main aim of the CPL is to offer more competitive cricket for those boys in the 5th, 6th & 7th XIs. They all still play in regular school fixtures but this has enabled them to enjoy the game even more and gain an even greater competitive edge. The boys absolutely love the new format, and long may it continue!

The Six Teams

SWB has produced the superb poster above which can be seen on the display board between the 6th Form & 5th Form Common Rooms. (FES kindly designed the display board, and it looks awesome!) Statistics and league tables are regularly updated and the tension is rapidly growing.

Report from ADJB - Week 2:

Round 2 and it is all change at the top of the table. Gxplosives are the only team to have won both their matches and are now in the lead. All three matches went down to the final ball in round 2 with the greatest drama being on the Rose Bowl. Redgrave (scorer of a half-century against Papplewick last week) needed 3 off the final ball to secure the first victory of the season for the Devils – having hit a huge six in the previous over, surely it was a formality? Mendis, however, had other ideas and bowled a vicious inswinging yorker for a dot ball to hand victory to the Sledgehammers instead.

In other matches Pritchard and Artz-Jones gave exhibitions of powerful batting, whilst Jung, Lee, Loder, Kim and Bastian all took 2 wickets each.

The great thing about the CPL is that anyone who did not bat today immediately bats at the top of the order next match and no-one can bowl a second over until everyone else has bowled an over too. This means that all of the boys are getting lots of batting and bowling experience in match situations and it is brilliant to observe the skill levels increase dramatically. Next round will be crucial – can the Devils pull off an upset and defuse the GXplosives to the delight of the Barbarians and Tornadoes currently in 2nd/3rd place? Can the Sledgehammers and Warriors move up the table? Roll on Monday ...

Report from ADJB - Week 3:

Wow! What an eventful round that was. The table has been thrown wide open as bottom placed Denham Devils absolutely stuffed the leaders GXplosive. In the other matches Beaconsfield Barbarians tied with Taplow Tornados in a thriller of a match, whilst Slough Sledgehammers beat the Windsor Warriors. The result of all of this is that GX slip down to third place and the Barbarians head the table. However, with only 7 points separating the 6 teams and two rounds to play the title is still wide open. Stars of round 3 were E Bagger, E Eyton, O Barnes, SJ Kim and B Tholstrup with the bat, whilst H Lepp took 3 wickets with his bowling.

Report from ADJB - Week 4:

With Spens Field out of action due to the 3rd form leadership day, CPL relocated to the much smaller pitches on Top field and Old Trafford. Small boundaries and matches side by side meant that an emergency meeting of the CPL Health and Safety Committee was held and the decision was made to use incrediballs instead of hard cricket balls. The wisdom of this was shown when some of our more powerful batsmen went berserk and began to launch several balls into Crown Lane and the surrounding SL2 area. The Barbarians beat the Sledgehammers with debutant Liang and Senior Pro Loder taking 3 wickets each for the Barbarians. Morrisroe and Kim both hit good scores too. The Devils have come into form and won another match to move them off the bottom of the table. They beat the Tornados by one run off the last ball of the match. In this match W Pritchard smashed 3 sixes and H Pervez, G Atkinson & P Turczynowicz also hit runs. In the final match GX returned to winning ways with a win over the Warriors. R Dick smashed a quick 29 including 3 towering maximums off 3 consecutive balls. J Polley and J Grewal were also in the runs, and then Dick completed a fine game with bowling figures of 4-12. The result of all of this is that Barbarians maintain their lead and the Devils are coming up on the inside rail.
There is one more round to play and the team at the top of the table after that will be crowned League Champions.
However, the fun doesn’t end there ...

The top 4 teams will then enter the CPL Cup play play-offs:
1st in league v 4th in league
2nd in league v 3rd in league

The winners of these matches will then meet in the CPL Cup Grand Final on Main Square for the ultimate honour of becoming CPL Grand Champions!!!!!!!!!!

Report from ADJB - The Playoff:

In between dodging some torrential downpours the CPL play offs took place on Wednesday 9 June.

In Match 1 the Sledgehammers hit an impressive 44-2 in their allocated 6 overs and must have felt confident of securing a place in the final. Beard and Eyton were the main run scorers here. However, GX overhauled the total with ease and without losing a wicket. Ahmed bashed 20 before retiring and Polley hit a respectable 14.

In Match 2 the Barbarians lost their opening batsman to the first ball of the match and at 18-3 looked in all sorts of trouble with Ramezani picking up 2 wickets. However, Loder and Morrisroe dug in and dragged the team up to a pleasing 45-4. The innings was also noticeable for a stunning catch by Kirkby. In reply Ramezani got the Warriors off to a flyer and the match seemed done and dusted. However, cometh the hour cometh SJ Kim - he took 3 wickets in an over and totally transformed the match. It came down to the final over with the Warriors needing 10 to win. Then 5 off the final ball. SJ bowled, Grewal swung the bat and ... one run was scored; victory to the Barbarians.

The Grand Final was therefore:
Beaconsfield Barbarians v GXplosive

This took  place on Thursday 16th June at 1645 on the hallowed turf of Main Square. There will be a report on the final very soon.  In the other match of the day the Devils beat the Tornadoes thanks to an innings of agricultural hitting from Redgrave. Commiserations to the Tornadoes who pick up the Wooden Spoon despite Pritchard’s best efforts with another 28*. He is the leading run scorer in CPL with a haul of 110. As he has only been out once his average is also an incredible 110 too.
