. Mr Lane then told the boys about the U13 Basketball team who won the IAPS National Basketball Championships last Saturday; a full write-up by the team's captain, M Zuanic, can be found here. Not only were the team crowned the National Basketball Champions but M Zuanic was also declared the winner of the Most Valuable Player award. To celebrate this enormous achievement, the team came up to collect medals and their trophy from Mr Doggart amid resounding applause.
Mr Granville ran through this week's football matches, highlighting some excellent results from the 1st, 2nd and 7th XI, as well as the table tennis matches against Farnham Common Junior School held last Thursday. Full details, including scorers, of this week's sports results can be found here. Mr Doggart praised those who played in the 5th and 6th Form instrumental concert held earlier this week and wished luck to those boys who are trying out for music scholarships this week.
Finally, Mr Smith gave us an insight into this week's school council meeting. A number of sensible suggestions were made, such as better quality footballs at matches, more tennis in the summer and more use of the climbing wall for boarders, which will be implemented straight away. Others, such as a review of the current prep system, will be dealt with later on in the school year. The school council is very successful, with over half of the ideas presented to Mr Doggart being approved and granted over the last few years. Boys are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity. |
As is traditional at Caldicott, every boy from the 3rd Form upwards learnt a poem by heart this term to recite to their English class. A selection of those who performed well from each year group were put through to the semi-finals and on Wednesday 25th January the Declamations final was held in the Centenary Hall. The audience comprised teachers, boarders, parents and this year's adjudicator, Mr Tom Wayman, Head of English at Wellington College.
Every boy gave a memorable performance and the range of poetry chosen was vast; upbeat, playful pieces such as Microsoft Christmas contrasted heavily with more sobering choices such as Mid-Term Break. The evening closed with a moving and utterly silencing extract from Clive Jermain's screenplay The Best Days of Your Life declaimed by C White.
Mr Wayman then came forward to give each boy individual feedback on his declamation and choose a winner and a runner up from each year group as well as an overall winner. He was also allowed to award two special prizes, a junior one and a senior one, to those whose declamations stood out but did not qualify for any of the other prizes. IAPS Basketball Tournament |
| On Saturday 28th January, Mr Lane took Caldicott's basketball team to Wellington College to compete in the IAPS National Basketball Tournament. The team's captain, M Zuanic, describes the outcome:
"When the team had beaten Edge Grove, we were all stunned. We had made it to the finals of the National Basketball Tournament. We turned around to see that the team we thought would win (Papplewick) were losing to the hosts (Yateley Manor), a team we scarcely beat in the first few rounds. In the final we all talked about how we were proud and surprised that we had made it to the finals. We were all up for this last match. We got onto the court and from the tip off we knew they were more up for this match.
At the beginning I told my friend from Papplewick that I would not let Yateley Manor win two years in a row. When we got our medals, we were all waiting tensely to find out who got the Most Valuable Player award. I could think of three reasons for any of the players from Caldicott to get it. At last he said the words 'the captain of Caldicott'. I was stunned. We had won a trophy and a Most Valuable Player award for the school. We all went home that night with high spirits."
