Cricket on the sports fields
May 2011
Assembly, 5 May
Thursday, 05 May 2011 05:22

The Headmaster was away at a conference, so Mr Smith took the Assembly this morning.

SUPERSTAR
French J You
Science S Forbes
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Holiday Reading F Hull
Science Holiday Work G Mackaness, J Polley, H Wakefield

Then Mr Rich gave the cricket results - good wins yesterday.

Finally, Mr Smith reminded the boys not to touch the high jump/crash mats. He also described the cricket square, which might be unfamiliar to the younger boys. They are particularly good squares and need to be looked after. They should not walk on them: even when doing Athletics they should walk around it.

The Assembly concluded, and the boys went to lessons.

Happening Now - Monday, 1045

Thanks to Ma'am Riddell for this picture of the Second Form boys at the Verulamium Museum. (It's a strange day at Caldicott today, as the 1st Forms are also on a visit, to the Imperial War Museum!). Below the boys are being told something of the history of St Albans (Verulamium in Roman times). Fuller report soon after they return.

What it's all about

Assembly, 12 May
Thursday, 12 May 2011 05:23

The Headmaster began with the awards:

SUPERSTAR
Mathematics SJ Kim, H Liang, A Song
HIGHLY COMMENDED
French J Ritblat
ICT R Peel, J Trew
Mathematics E Eyton, A Shoff, J You
Reading Z Ahmed, R Mackenzie

These were followed by the cricket results (available in the Sports' section). Mr Rich gave these results, and then the Headmaster came forward to ask what it is called when 3 wickets are taken in 3 balls. A lot of boys knew the answer: a hat trick. Mr Doggart then presented the match ball to K Gill for his hat trick yesterday.

Mr Smith gave four reminders about things they must remember - taking spikes off before coming indoors, etc. A particularly important one this term, however, was to name their cricket bats.

The rules for safety in the swimming pool have now been formalised and smart signs professionally produced. Here is just one of them on display at the pool:

Be careful, be safe
The advice, next to the daily pool safety record

Mr Wild reminded the boys to check the times of their music lessons and to ensure that they come to the rehearsals for Sunday's concert on time. This will be an excellent event. It is in place of Chapel, so parents returning with their boarding sons could stay to watch this concert, which also features the Caldicott Choral Society.

Finally, he wished the Fourth Form good luck for their Drama exams, taking place today and tomorrow.

A last run-through for the clarinets

This picture was taken during the final rehearsal for the first of our summer concerts, involving all of the boys in the 5th Form and many 6th Form and younger boarders. To show the breadth of the programme, the main page is reproduced below.

Well Done, Boys

Trinity Guildhall produces an QCA accredited syllabus in Drama.

Grade 2 (taken by our 4th years) is the top level for (state school) KS2.

For the exam, the boys were required to:

  • Learn and act out a speech
  • Learn and declaim a poem
  • Create a mime
  • Read out aloud from a book of their choice
  • Have a mini-viva with the examiner regarding their presented work.

The boys took a term to prepare for their exam which was the culmination of their four years of drama training, initially with Nicky Short and now with me (Ma'am Ash)!

The examiner is provided by the TG examining board to ensure a purely objective summative assessment.
