Modern Languages

French is started in Year 3 when boys are immersed into the language and culture through games and pictures. No reading or writing takes place in Years 3 and 4, they focus solely on speaking and listening.

A more formal approach begins in Year 5 with the boys following a course called ‘Studio’. This continues until Year 8 when they take Common Entrance or Scholarship papers for their public school.

The ethos of our MFL teaching is balanced between the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with French being used as much as possible in the classroom by both teachers and boys.
