Caldicott boy attends his first Film Premier

15 October 2019

On Thursday 10 October, Toby W (4th Form) attended the UK premiere of his first film Rare Beasts as part of the London Film Festival. Toby stars in the film as Larch, the son of Billie Piper’s character. Piper wrote, directed and stars in the film. Rare Beasts is Toby’s first film, after having been in several TV series.

On the red carpet, Toby stood in front of the press whilst they took his picture posing with co-stars Billie Piper and Lily James. He was able to go into the auditorium for the introduction and Billie Piper called Toby up to the stage to great applause. Toby is unfortunately too young to watch the film, so wasn’t able to stay for the screening.

Toby filmed Rare Beasts in London and Spain in September and October 2018. On some days, he did a full day at Caldicott, took the bus to Chiswick and was then taken to set where he filmed until midnight or later. On days when Toby wasn’t in school because of filming, he had to catch up with school work on set to make sure he didn’t fall behind.

Toby was so pleased that Head of Drama, Jo Duncan, visited him on set and took part in filming, spending the day as an extra. You can see her in the final scene of the film.

Larch, Toby’s character, is very different to Toby and he had to really change his behaviour to become the character. He had to learn to act with a tic and stammer, be very angry and on one occasion had to have a fit in public.

With many great actors on the project, Toby had lots of fun and learnt a great deal from them. His highlight was messing around with David Thewlis, who plays Professor Lupin in Harry Potter. David put Toby in a wheelchair in a park and started pushing Toby around very fast whilst pulling wheelies!

Rare Beasts will be in cinemas in early 2020.
