Red for Ruth

15 November 2019

In September, nine Caldicott boys took on a challenge to walk Hadrian’s Wall for two charities: The Dusty Yak Foundation and the Ruth Strauss Foundation – our school charity for the year.

  • Dusty Yak Foundation aims to relieve poverty, advance education and protect and preserve the health of orphans, neglected, impoverished and/or sick children in need in Nepal and elsewhere in the world who are suffering from such hardship and distress.
  • Ruth Strauss Foundation provides emotional, psychological and wellbeing support to patients and their families going through a similar experience and funds research into rare lung cancers.

The boys successfully completed their trek and raised over £12000 for the charities (£6,344.08 each).

Today the school handed over a cheque to representatives from both charities, which included Old Caldicotian and Ruth Strauss’s husband, cricketer Andrew Strauss MBE. The boys gave a brief presentation about their walk, their experiences and why they wanted to help raise money. The school also heard from a school in Nepal, via a live link-up, where the money raised will go to help. The girls in the school thanked the boys for their fundraising and sang a traditional Nepalese song.

Boys and staff also wore red today in tribute to Ruth Strauss and in support of the foundation that now supports many other families going through a similar experience to the Strauss family.

The Caldicott community has very fond memories of Ruth as a former Caldicott parent. Her premature death last year from a rare form of lung cancer has been deeply felt by the whole community.

Caldicott believes charity work is incredibly important and the school is very fortunate to have such a wonderful community spirit driving forward amazing fundraising events for the main charities of choice each year.
