Year 5 take a magical trip to see Mary Poppins

27 February 2020

On Thursday, Year 5 enjoyed a rather magical trip to see Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. The boys are exploring the classic children's story in Art, Drama and English this term.

The production’s set design was incredible with one of the highlights being 17 Cherry Tree Lane opening like a doll’s house and the children's attic nursery lowering down from the rafters, hosting many of Mary's magical tricks. The boys have been studying the Edwardian nursery and toys in their Art lessons this term and will be designing kites to form part of the set for their own theatre production Tall Tales and Funky Fables later this term.

In Drama the boys are exploring the journey of Mary Poppins from page to stage and in English they are using the themes in the play as a creative writing challenge.

With the rip roaring classics Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Let's Go Fly a Kite, A Spoon Full of Sugar and Step in Time all set to outstanding choreography, it was an absolute delight for the boys to be in the audience and enjoy the high calibre performances being delivered on stage. By the end, boys and staff were up on their feet clapping and dancing to the show's finale.

‘I enjoyed the magic tricks. Mary was able to pull lots of large objects out of her carpet bag and she did a lot of magical tricks. It left me wondering how the team behind the show were able to do it.’Jeremy Y

‘My favourite part was when Mary Poppins flew right over the audience up to the Grand Circle of the theatre. My favourite character was Bert because he was full of character, brought lots of energy and was a brilliant dancer.’ - Leo L F
