Year 5 and 6 Boys create their own Theatre Sets

13 May 2020

At the start of term boys in Year 5 and 6 were asked to take on the role of set designers. Through guided tasks and the feedback given in their virtual drama lessons, the boys were invited to submit their final set design projects this week. They were judged by Ma'am Duncan and Mr Brown. The amount of work and effort that has gone in has been absolutely phenomenal and the boys creativity, problem-solving skills and ingenuity have shined through.

Year 5 were asked to design a set for a play version of Geoffrey Patterson's picture book Jonah and the Whale. They studied the picture book and watched videos of professional set designers discussing how they approach set design. They then created mood boards, sketches and were invited to submit model boxes. The winners were:

  • 1st Place -  Leo LF (Listen to Leo talk about his set design on the Drama Twitter page)
  • 2nd Place - Charlie K
  • 3rd Place - Zuhair M
  • Commended Award from Mr Brown - Cooper A
  • Commended Award from Ma’am Duncan - Elliot T and Charlie B

For this project, boys who wished to write a script for the production, instead of designing a set, were invited to do so. Well done to Edward B and Kevin L who produced the winning script entries.

Year 6 were given the project of designing a set for a production of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet or Macbeth. They studied both of these plays last term and were able to bring their knowledge of the texts into their designs. After revisiting three key scenes from the play of their choice, they set off on their design projects. First, they created a mood board of ideas, developed these into sketches, before creating their very own model boxes. The winners were:

  • 1st Place - Alex T
  • 2nd Place - Orson H
  • 3rd Place  - Gilly B
  • Commended Award from Mr Brown - Aaron M
  • Commended Award from Ma’am Duncan - Otis FB
