Caldicott Speech Day 2020

01 July 2020

The Caldicott community came together, virtually, for a very enjoyable Speech Day on Wednesday 1 July. We were delighted to celebrate another successful academic year and all the boys’ achievements.

This year was certainly a different affair with the speeches and prizes being broadcast into parents’ homes and in the Performing Arts Centre for Year 8 boys and staff. The film showcased plenty of achievements, memories from the year gone by and speeches from the Chair of Governors, Malcolm Swift, the Headmaster and special guest, Sir Andrew Strauss. The boys also made an appearance, expressing their own thanks to staff and the community.

Interspersed with the speeches, we were also treated to a variety of films capturing the past year’s achievements, the leavers’ journey through Caldicott, a whole school virtual rendition of the song Jerusalem, and a special Caldicott Lockdown Poem performed by the boys.

Chair of Governors, Malcolm Swift, started proceedings by reflecting on his time as Chair this year and the work of the Governors at Caldicott. He praised the remarkable efforts of Virtual Caldicott and getting the school open and safe for boys for the last week of term. He also acknowledged the extraordinary support from the parental body with their commitment to the school over the past year. He went onto say that there may be challenging times ahead but the school will be able to build on the unique strength of being relevant today and adaptable for the future.

Malcolm Swift then passed onto Jeremy Banks for the Headmaster’s address. Mr Banks reflected on the past year and Virtual Caldicott. He said he has seen an abundance of optimism and gratitude from all in the community and this will help the boys in their future endeavours if they ever come across difficult times again. He went onto to recognise the brilliant efforts of the boys in their Common Entrance exams and another record year for scholarships and awards - ‘our academic culture coupled with a commitment to the all-rounder experience is clear to be seen.’

This year’s Cricket Captain, Luke LS, was given the honour of speaking to our guest speaker, Sir Andrew Strauss, and ask him a few questions about his time at Caldicott and his cricket career. Strauss, being an Old Caldicotian, gave very inspiring answers to the questions from the boys. We are certain they will take all the advice on board and are looking forward to cricket, and other sport, with their friends again soon.

To end the proceedings, Mr Banks looked to the future and said, ‘Our core values of perseverance, integrity, courage, compassion and humour have served us well at this most unsettling of times so it is clear to me that simultaneously those words give us an unshakable foundation on which we can base our decision making and also great ambition. This is the Caldicott Way.’

Even though the school community was not able to come together and celebrate the end of the year like normal; Speech Day 2020 was still a fantastic and fitting way to remember all we have done over the past three terms.
