12 February 2021

As we head towards the Half Term break, I would like to thank you for your support. Our approach to this version of virtual schooling has gone well with our three principles of maintaining routine, keeping connected and quality, not quantity guiding us through the challenging landscape. As a father I am reconciled to putting aside my concern over too much screen time for now in the knowledge that live lessons are giving my daughter the social interaction and learning outcomes Sophie and I expect. Many of you have said much the same to me in emails and when we meet on Teams. As we head into the final lap of VC2, Caldicott will continue to reflect and improve whilst also doing everything in our power to nurture the mental strength boys and staff need.

The Prime Minister will unveil the UK Government’s plans for reopening the country on Monday 22 February and so we will make no firm plans before then. The current position of the government is that schools will not return until March 8 and that is not guaranteed. As we have now done several times, we want to have a range of scenarios planned to give parents, boys and staff confidence in our way forward. Recent media attention is cautiously optimistic and I hope we can have some part of this term face to face, albeit a virtual schooling offer will not end before the end of term, regardless of the reopening plans.

So the plan for the next week is to recharge the batteries and prepare myself for whatever is coming. Your sons and their teachers are exhausted and I would like to pay tribute to each and every one of them. I’m looking forward to lazy mornings, watching the Six Nations and the 2nd test versus India, reading ‘War Doctor’, long walks with Bertie (and a child if I’m lucky), open fires and five days of ‘Come Dine with Me’ for all five members of the Banks family taking turns.
