With our emphasis on character education and developing exemplary global citizens of the future, it’s no surprise that Caldicott boys are keen to give back to the community and are bursting with ideas and initiatives to do so.

One pupil recently took it upon himself to raise money from his walk from home to school, which may not sound like a big deal, but when you learn that he lives more than 19 miles from school, the task becomes considerably more daunting. He used this 7.5 hour walk to support Chickenshed. Another boy chose to use part of his summer holiday to walk the height of Mount Kinabalu (8.7km) and raised £16,000 for hungry families in Malaysia.

We have regular whole-school money-raising endeavours and formal ties to several local and national charities. Last Summer, for example, Caldicott officially completed the ‘Channel Challenge’, with boys collectively swimming 11,118 lengths of our pool – the equivalent of the English Channel three times and the Bristol Channel – and raised thousands for the Marine Conservation Society and Cancer Research UK.

One charity that we hold dear is the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which provides emotional support for families to prepare for the death of a parent. This was launched in 2018 by Sir Andrew Strauss, the former England cricket captain and old-Caldicotian, when his wife was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers.
