Caldicott wins Food for Life Award

15 February 2018

The provision of high quality food for both boys and staff has long been a priority for Caldicott.  Priority has been given by our catering team over many years to freshly prepared and locally sourced food that contains organic ingredients where possible. Recently the school was awarded the Silver Food for Life Served Here award from the Soil Association in recognition of the fantastic catering provision at Caldicott, the first independent school in Buckinghamshire to gain this level of award.

The Food for Life Served Here award helps schools demonstrate that they are providing fresh, local and varied food choices on school menus, which has a positive impact on the health and well-being of the boys and staff.  The Soil Association’s scheme offers bronze, silver and gold awards.

To achieve the silver award the Soil Association’s independent inspectors noted that 87% of food that Caldicott serves is freshly prepared on site.  It also assessed that the school uses seasonal ingredients that are produced outdoors in the UK and all meat consumed is from animals reared on farms that meet exacting UK legal welfare standards.  In addition, the inspectors observed that the school’s catering staff are trained in fresh food production and understand the importance of providing excellent seasonal menus for all.  The school’s carefully constructed three-week menu cycle varies throughout the year.

Food for Life brings communities together around the core ethos of healthy, tasty and sustainable food.  They support schools to take a whole school approach to educating children and adults in healthy eating and food production, themes that Caldicott has embraced.

Antonia Doggart (Headmaster’s Wife 1998 – 2017) presented the award to Chef Manager Julie Ayling during a school assembly in December.  Antonia was an advocate for good food and healthy eating at Caldicott over many years and the school was pleased to see her return to present the award.

Chef Manager, Julie Ayling, said, “We are all so very proud and pleased to receive this award.  It is a great achievement after many months of hard work and dedication and making sure all the meals we serve at Caldicott are healthy, fresh and above all, enjoyed by the whole school community.”
