11 June 2021

This afternoon there was a roar of cheers as boys finished their exams, which was quite a contrast to the unusually quiet week we’ve had as 1st to 5th Form boys knuckled down to end of year assessments, and the 6th Form to their Common Entrance exams. They all applied themselves well and the results will be communicated to you in due course. I’m proud and confident the boys will have given their best, which is all we ask.

I am writing this as I catch a few minutes in between a full day of interviews and lesson observations for our new Director of Music. We shall miss Mr Wild, but the calibre of candidates coming through is extraordinary. It’s going to be a tough choice, but I’m certain you’ll be impressed too with our chosen replacement.

The round of interviews meant I wasn’t able to watch the 1st form declamations as I’d hoped to, but I hear the boys spoke with assurance and eloquence. Mr Evans adjudicated and gave individual feedback to each boy. In the absence of an audience of parents, they performed to camera, to teachers and their peers.

Which leads me to speak about the anticipation we are all feeling about whether we are on a home stretch to coming out of lockdown, that parents will once again be allowed to watch their children perform inside first-hand, rather than via video screen, or whether the Prime Minister will continue to exercise caution in light of the virulent new strains of covid.

A lot hangs in the balance about the anticipated announcement this Monday and it will inform the shape of all the events we hope to host during the rest of term. I will be having planning meetings with colleagues on Tuesday and Wednesday and will communicate further towards the end of next week.

Have a great weekend.
