Armed with techniques that are supported by scientific research in the field, Elevate Education returned this week, this time to run a workshop with our 5th Form titled ‘Memory Mnemonics’.

With exams just around the corner, it was the perfect time for the boys to learn some of the best methods to improve not only their learning of information but also their recall of that information when it really matters. Will volunteered for a demonstration to kick off the workshop, where he was asked to memorise as many words as he could out of the 16 that were read out. He did well, but understandably, couldn’t remember everything. It was fascinating to learn about how the brain stores information; you are much more likely to remember the first word, last word, and words that stand out as peculiar. The brain also does something called ‘chunking’, where words within similar categories are grouped together and thus easier to recall.

The boys learnt lots of progressive methods that will help them retain information for their exams by storing it in their long-term memory. Our 5th Formers’ exams after half term are only internal, but in conjunction with these revision techniques will provide great practise for their Common Entrance exams next year.
