Friday is our day to celebrate World Book Day and in typical Caldicott-style we haven’t done it half measure! It has been great to see the school filled with an eclectic mix of zany characters as staff and boys alike dressed up as their favourite fictional heroes and villains.

The ‘Masked Reader’ returned on Thursday, when the boys were shown a video of various staff members reading extracts of books with their identities hidden. The full video (which you can find here) was shown to them on Friday morning at tutor time.

All day on Friday we’ve been treated to sessions with author Ross Welford who delivered interactive talks to our 1st – 5th Form boys. They learnt all about the engaging author’s background and how magic and science have inspired his writing and influenced his books. They then worked on a collaborative creative writing task in which the boys came up with a main character, sidekick, a problem and how they go about overcoming it!

6th Form had their session last in the afternoon, and the boys worked individually on how to write an ‘awesome opening’. By breaking down the first chapter into three parts, Ross took the boys through a solid template of how to form a piece of fictional writing. Thank you, Ross Welford for your time; our boys’ creative writing skills have certainly benefitted from your visit!

As ever, the Costume Competition was the ultimate prize of the day and so congratulations Xander F (2nd Form) as Tom Gates, Rafe G (5th Form) as Mr Tickle, and a special mention to Philip Field-Marsham (1st Form) as Dog Man. They’ll receive their prizes on Monday!
